By the time Terence arrived at Shelter KC, he had grown tired of a 30-year cocaine addiction. “It was something I thought I could control,” he remembers. “But after a couple of relapses, I realized I couldn’t do it. I needed help.”

A functional addict, Terence maintained a steady job and held an apartment, but the drugs were killing him. “I really couldn’t see what it was doing to me, but the people around me could.”

Those people included his three grown daughters. “I would tell them, ‘I’m fine,’” he says. “They never turned their backs on me, but they didn’t condone what I was doing either.”

But his daughters could see what was happening to their father. Going through a divorce and having his addiction worsen. A life that was going into an ever-deepening downward spiral.

After God guided Terence to Shelter KC, your support made it possible for him to enroll in our Christian Community of Recovery (C-COR) program. There, Terence realized there were deeper issues behind his drug use.

“I learned so much about myself,” he says. “I had been trying to fill gaps in my life. It had a lot to do with the way I had been raised.

"I had been raised with worldly values. At Shelter KC, I learned what a godly man is like.”

Two months after graduating from C-COR, God blessed Terence with his own apartment just five minutes from Shelter KC, so he’s able to stay connected with his support group here.

And how do his daughters feel about the changes Terence has made? “Once I got in this program, they were the happiest people. They never turned their backs on me. I also have two sisters who are the same. They make sure I’m okay.”

“I thank God for bringing me out of it,” he says today. “I have to have the Holy Spirit leading me and keep God at the center of my life.”
