Building Hope:
Phase 2 of the Transformations Campaign
For the last 75 years, Shelter KC has been a place of refuge, transformation, and new beginnings. Through the Transformations Campaign, we are expanding our impact to serve more men on their journey toward lasting change. With Phase 1 complete, including expanding our services with our Renew Mental Health and Respite Center, we now turn our focus to Phase 2: Building a Brighter Future. This final phase will construct a brand-new facility in our existing parking lot, creating essential space and expanded programming for our Christ-centered recovery program, Christian Community and Recovery.

Give Today and Be Part of the Transformation
Phase Two
With Phase One of our renovations now complete, Shelter KC is excited to begin the next chapter—Phase Two. Staying true to our mission of walking alongside individuals experiencing homelessness, many of whom are navigating mental health challenges, medical recovery, crisis situations, and trauma, we remain committed to offering more than shelter—we offer light, hope, and opportunity. Phase Two builds on this foundation by focusing on creating spaces that foster dignity, respect, and the environment needed for long-term transformation. As our vision expands, so does our excitement to grow the mission and deepen our impact. Phase Two renovations include:
- Aycock Welcome Center
- Colaizzi Chapel
- Program Offices
- Recovery Community Housing
- Recreation Areas
- Courtyard
- Meeting Spaces
- Community Kitchens
- Shower Facilities

Transformations Campaign Goal
At Shelter KC, we believe that a safe, welcoming environment is essential to true healing and transformation. By supporting the Transformations Campaign, you’ll help us create spaces that strengthen and sustain our life-changing programs—including emergency housing, case management, homeless outreach, and addiction recovery.
So far we have raised $6.1 million of our goal. The goal for Phase Two is an additional $1.5 million. Together, we can build more than shelter and build the foundation for lasting change.

Transform Lives Today
“The design of a physical space influences the mental state of the people in that space. That shapes their attitudes and behavior.”
- Sally Augustin, “Place Advantage, Applied Psychology for Interior Architects”
Phase 2 Renovations

Phase 2 of our renovation project is focused on creating a more supportive, dignified environment. Key improvements will include the addition of Recovery Community Housing, recreation areas, a courtyard, meeting spaces, new community kitchens, and updated shower facilities. Each of these enhancements is intentionally designed to provide more personal space, encourage reflection, and foster a sense of belonging and respect.
We believe that a warm, inviting, and thoughtfully designed environment plays a crucial role in restoring dignity and promoting positive growth. By creating brighter, more welcoming spaces, we can better support the men we serve as they work toward lasting recovery and renewed hope.
Phase 2 Expansion
For the past 30 years, the Mission has operated out of a four-building, 23,000 sq. ft. complex that, while serving the immediate needs, has grown tight as demand for our services expands. Following the completion of the renovations of Phase 1, we will begin construction on 12,000 additional square footage. This extra space will be built on top of our existing parking area and used to better accommodate our guests and provide a more welcoming face to the community.

Phase 2 Expansion Includes:

Aycock Welcome Center
In honor of a long-time servant, friend, and founder, Dr. Jarette Aycock, Shelter KC is dedicating the new C-COR living space in his honor.

Colaizzi Chapel
"The Colaizzi Chapel", named after the former Executive Director, will feature an open, airy space that overlooks the center courtyard.

Outdoor Spaces
Outdoor community spaces promote mental well-being, encouraging social connection, and offering a peaceful environment where individuals can find healing, hope, and reflection.

Recreational Areas
Recreational spaces offer more than just relaxation, they foster community connection, support self-improvement, and create meaningful opportunities for reflection and recovery.

McKnight Commons
In honor of previous employee Glen McKnight, Shelter KC is dedicating the third floor living space.

C-COR Living Facilities
Living spaces that allow for privacy, peace, and recovery with dignity and positivity.
Ways to Support
For 75 years, faithful partners have enabled us to meet the needs of thousands of individuals facing the challenging issues of homelessness. As we step out on faith, once again, we ask for your support as we seek to increase our space, expand our services and grow our partnerships to meet the ever-changing needs of those experiencing homelessness in Kansas City. Together, we can recognize the dignity and path of renewal for all our guests and seek to offer a better way to shelter.

Trauma-Informed Design
We are so excited to work with HOK for both phases of this project. Through the research on trauma-informed design "there's a strong link between people's physiological state, emotional state, and their physical environment . . . it is possible to design and maintain supportive and healing environments to help people resist re-traumatization." - Jill Pable, "Designed for Healing." Shelter KC's future facility will include the following trauma-informed design principles and elements: Intentional use of healing colors, Reinforcement of personal identity and sense of ownership,A safe and inviting environment, A dynamic, multi-sensory environment, sense of community, and more!
